Project Description

This senior housing adapts the small home model to fit the culture and way of life of the Tohono O’odham people.

A 12 unit studio style Elder Home is sited adjacent to the Archie Hendricks, Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility. Each home is based on the “green house” model and is intended to de-institutionalize long-term care by creating a home-like environment with few medical signposts. LRD’s architects worked with the Tohono O’odham to design the homes with attention to tribal customs and landmarks.

The Elder Home serves as a place where elders can receive assistance and support with activities of daily living and some clinical care, without the assistance becoming the focus of their existence. Each resident enjoys a private room with easy access to all areas of the home, including the kitchen, living and outdoor patios. The elders are free from the institutional schedule and are able to engage in activities as they choose. Meals are prepared in the open kitchen and served at a large dining table where staff, residents and visitors enjoy pleasant dining. The living space is situated around the hearth with high levels of natural light and is surrounded by patios.
